Mikaeel Habib

Clearly was established in 2016 by Mikaeel Habib, who continues to oversee the initiative today. Mikaeel graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2022, where he studied neuroscience with minors in music and chemistry. He is currently a research specialist at the Wolf Lab in the Department of Neurosurgery at the Perelman School of Medicine, where he is studying how neuromodulation may have treatment implications for traumatic brain injury.

Zahra Karmally

Zahra Karmally joined the Clearly initiative in 2024 after completing her medical degree and foundation training in the UK. While in her hometown of Karachi for an ophthalmology elective at Aga Khan University Hospitals, she was eager to improve eye health within the local community. Clearly has allowed her to provide a social service and enhance her communication skills through performing visual acuity screenings in a second language. Zahra plans to pursue ophthalmology specialty training in the UK while continuing her work with Clearly. She is focused on expanding screenings in Karachi schools and raising awareness about retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in Pakistan.

Behind Clearly

Mikaeel grew up with a younger sibling who was diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA)—an autoimmune condition that causes inflammation in the joints—in conjunction with JIA-associated uveitis, which is an inflammation of the uvea (the middle layer of the eye). As a result, he developed a greater awareness for diseases of the eye and a special interest in how they are treated. After having volunteered at organizations such as the Civil Hospital Karachi, Edhi Foundation, and Layton Rahmatullah Benevolent Trust (LRBT) over the years, Mikaeel gained a deeper understanding of the insufficient access to basic healthcare for so many people in Pakistan. He was motivated to establish Clearly to provide basic eye care for children from low socioeconomic backgrounds in Karachi, Pakistan. Mikaeel learned to perform visual acuity screenings at The Eye Centre at South City Hospital Karachi, under the guidance of ophthalmologist Dr. Mahnaz Naveed Shah, which laid the foundations for the work that Clearly is able to conduct today.
